Summary: Three years after the events of the movie, Astrid makes a choice.

"We should do this more often," Ruffnut said.

"Agreed."  Astrid's eyes were closed as she enjoyed the secluded hot spring, but they blinked open as Ruff pulled her onto her lap and wrapped her arms around Astrid's waist.

"You know what I think we should do?" Ruffnut murmured, her fingers dancing on Astrid's thigh.

Astrid smiled.  "I think I can guess."

"Are you saying I'm getting predictable?  I need to step up my game."  She slipped her fingers down, and Astrid bit her lip.

"Wait, I think I hear them," Hiccup said from a little ways off.

"Seriously?!" Ruffnut yelled to the heavens, and Astrid let out a deep belly laugh.  "I'm going to kick their asses, I really am."

"Be nice," Astrid said through her giggles.

Hiccup and Tuffnut stepped around the natural rock barrier separating the spring from the forest at large, Hiccup with a sigh and Tuffnut with a smirk.  "Hello ladies," Hiccup said gamely.

"Thor's hammer, can't you two find your own places?" Ruffnut demanded as Astrid sank a few more inches into the water.

"Hey, it's not my fault you two," Hiccup gestured to Ruff and Tuff, "think alike.  I'm just along for the ride."

"And what a ride it is!" Tuff said, thrusting his hips.

"Oh gods."  Astrid covered her face with her hands.  "Don't start that again."

Hiccup smiled, then looked at the other boy.  "Tuff, should we --"

He didn't make it any further before Tuff's pants hit him square in the face.  "Cannonball!" Tuff cried, leaping to the spring and sending a large wave over the shrieking girls.

"What is wrong with you?" Ruffnut cried, spitting out water.

"Anything's more fun if I get to annoy you while doing it," he said with a grin.  Astrid laughed, and Ruffnut kicked at him futilely.

Hiccup, having disrobed, leaned his prosthetic against a rock and slipped in.  Ruffnut was glowering, and he made sure to give her a wide berth as he drifted over near Tuff.  "Well, isn't this homey," he said once he was well clear of the Thorston girl's reach.  Tuffnut snorted.

Ruffnut leaned her chin on Astrid's shoulder.  "You don't like them that much do you?" she asked.  "Like, if they were to suddenly turn up dead or something?  Hypothetically."

"I like them well enough," Astrid said, running the back of her fingers over Ruff's cheek.  "And we're all friends here."

Ruff groaned and tipped her head back.  "I know we're close and everything, but this is ridiculous."

Astrid laughed.  "Ruff, your girlfriend's ex-boyfriend is dating your twin brother."

"Yeah," Hiccup chimed in, "I think we've moved past close and right into incestuous."  Ruff and Tuff both made faces, and he smiled.

"So..." Astrid said, trying to ignore the fact that the twins were trying to kick each other under the water.

"So..." Hiccup replied, ignoring the same thing.

"How's your dad?"

Hiccup rolled his eyes.  "He brought out an axe when Tuff was over last night.  It was actually kind of funny."

"That was terrifying!" Tuffnut suddenly said, and winced when Ruff scored a hit to his shin.

"He was just messing with you."

"No way man, he's going to kill me.  Ruff's gonna come get me for breakfast one day, and all that'll be left is a bloody smear and maybe like, an ear."

"Works for me," Ruffnut said cheerfully.

"So he's..."  Astrid trailed off and gave a half-shrug.

"I don't know," Hiccup said with a sigh.  "He still won't acknowledge anything, but I think he's calming down.  Unspoken death threats aside," he added, patting Tuff's leg.  "I think he realized it could be worse."

"Whatever," Tuff said.  "I'm still giving it a few more days."

"If he hasn't killed you yet, he's probably not going to."

Tuff shot Astrid a doleful look.  "You'll check it out if I get murdered, right?"

"Sure," Astrid said, her lips quirking up in a half-grin.  "We'll have the ear for evidence after all."  Satisfied, Tuff leaned back.

"Well our mom loves you," Ruffnut said, giving Astrid a squeeze.  "She says you're a good influence on me or some crap like that."

"It's not like I could have inspired you to be any worse," Astrid said a laugh.

Ruff shot her a sultry grin and buried her nose in Astrid's neck.  "I dunno, Astrid.  You don't exactly inspire me to be good either."

"Call it even?" Astrid asked, a squeak in her voice.

"Fair enough."

"Control yourself, woman," Tuffnut said, turning up his nose.  Ruffnut scowled at him, and he stuck out his tongue.  Then he looked at the side of the pool where their clothes were piled with a thoughtful expression on his face.

"What?" Ruffnut asked, then her eyes widened.

Astrid was suddenly thrown across the spring as Ruff and Tuff both lunged for the clothes at the same time.  "Hands off!" Ruff snarled as they fought over a pair of leggings.

"We owe you for stealing our pants!"

"Well it's not happening today!"

"Wanna bet?"

Astrid shook her head and drifted over next to Hiccup.  He shot her a grin, and she rolled her eyes skyward, but her expression was affectionate as she watched the twins.  "I guess it all worked out," he said.

"I guess so," was all Astrid said.

He studied her face carefully.  "Was it worth it?"

This time Astrid dropped her head forward before leaning it back to look at Hiccup.  "Yes," she said with a sigh.  "I wouldn't have started it if it wasn't worth it.  But I may jump off the dock if I ever have to do that again."

Hiccup chuckled.  "Then I guess you'll just have to stick with Ruff."

"Damn straight," Astrid muttered.  She smirked as Ruff shoved Tuff under the water.  "At least it'll never get boring."

Hiccup nodded and looked back at the twins.  "Should we separate them?"

"I'm not getting in the middle of that, but feel free."

"...they'll work it out."

Astrid smiled as she watched her girl.  No, it hadn't been easy, any of it.  But there was easy, and there was right.  Sitting there now with her friends and her lover, Astrid knew there had only ever been one choice.  It hadn't been easy, but it had been right, and that made it worth so much more in the end.

Her girl.  Her lover.  Her choice.  She wouldn't trade it for anything in the world.
I couldn't actually remember anything that I meant to write for the epilogue, so I made stuff up. Whatevs.

And it's done. Huzzah. All right peeps, it's been real! I'm outta here!

No, seriously, I'm pretty much done with the HTTYD fic at this point. Mostly at least. I don't want to stop writing, but I need some new fandoms. Too bad I don't have any. Um, let's see, anyone here like Burton's Wonderland movie? Maybe I'll do that next. Or maybe not, I don't know. Oh well.

So all the comments you've left really mean a lot to me, but I feel like it would be more cohesive for me just to reply to this one. I have read and enjoyed all your comments though. :)

This story was easily the most difficult I've ever written, both because there's just more of it than any other story I've done, and because of the subject matter. I don't personally feel it was an entirely successful attempt, but it was still an important step for me to take, and I'm very glad you enjoyed it so much!

This fanfic was by far one of my favorites if not the favorite, it had a really great ending and was overall very well written, it made me laugh so hard my sides hurt and I almost even cried (something I don't normally do with fanfics or books) and I do have to say that I absolutely *adored* your twins, they were thoroughly enjoyable in every single way XD I read through them all in less then three hours, and I really enjoyed your paring of Hiccup and Tuffnut, before this I would have never known about the paring :P I fail.

And wonderland.....that sounds amazing white and red queen? Alice and red queen? OOO Alice and the Mad Hatter <3 (my personal favorite paring, always thought Alice should have stayed and just been with the hatter) but anyways can't wait to read it!!!!!

Poor, poor fishlegs. Not even a mention of some (extremely disturbing) relationship with Snotlout or anything. And as far as I can tell, they are the only six people of their age on that island...

No, you don't have to get everyone hooked up at once, but leaving them out in the cold, with nary a blanket and member of the same gender to keep them warm is a little cold (excuse the pun)

Just read through this, and loved it! It's refreshing to see well thought out fanfiction with proper grammar and believable scenarios.

Also, as for fandoms, I've found myself addicted to the Mai-HiME and Mai-Otome universe. It's an anime, but the yuri paring is pretty much canon by the end of it all. (It's also taken over my brain)

Thanks! I'm sure there are still errors, but I do my best with the grammar, and with thinking up interesting scenarios.

Ah, I haven't watched any anime since high school. I'm just kind of writing for various little fandoms that catch my interest these days. My output's definitely slowed down a lot, but whatcha gonna do?

GAH. So I just finished reading this, and I LOVE IT. Normally I'm not a big Tuffcup shipper, but I really kind of love the way you wrote them here. And of COURSE I loved the Ruffstrid; you write them better than most. You're also really good with character voices; nothing the characters said or did sounded even remotely unbelievable.

Also, lol to Fishlegs finding out that girls don't like multicolored dice. Also that some morning all they are going to find of Tuffnut is his ear.

LOOOVE!

Aw, thanks! I'm glad you enjoyed it! The Tuffcup wasn't really anything more than an interesting experiment, but I had fun with it. The Ruffstrid I have carefully cultivated over several stories, and I do enjoy writing them. I'm glad the characters came across; it's interesting trying to write fully fleshed characters when some of them only had about five lines in the movie itself. But that's part of the fun!

I just want to say that I love your Ruffstrid oneshots on ff.net; you write them so naturally and believably. Which is not easy, yo. And I hear ya about fleshing out characters; it's hard giving them actual dialogue instead of witty one-liners. But you did it splendidly!

I watched the movie yesterday and then i read this. the differences are so brutal that i laughed like crazy after the second page XD at page 9 or so ruff thinks about about her feelings. she thaught something like she was jealous when hiccupp and astrid were getting together. i fell of my chair because i laughed so hard. that was dangerous man! if your other stuff is like that too youre going to kill me one day, but there are worse ways to go than dying of laughing. but the story was the greatest love story i`ve read so far. and the first one to be mentioning homosexuals btw. whats with that? :?

Lol before today I didn't even know there was any sort of.. anything related to this fandom, I guess you would call it. I saw some art which dutifully led to this and I'm really glad I clicked the link :P

Fanfiction is readily available no matter what you're looking for but quite a bit of it is either poorly written or downright trashy. You did a very good job writing this and it wouldn't surprise me if you planned on writing as a future or if you'd been educated formally. Either that or you're just a talented fan, who knows. Anyway, I've only seen the movie a few times but from what I remember you portrayed your characters well and respected their established personalities rather than substituting with your own constructs, which is commendable for a fanfiction writer.

You presented realistic situations and reinforced them with legitimate reactions from the characters, something of which is lacking in the fanfiction community. Generally the story was well formed and dynamic and you added a whole other layer of depth by including characters that aren't immediately relevant, as the common reader sees it, to the story. One thing I noticed and enjoyed a bunch was how well you kept your characters IN character, not only based on who they were in the movie but what the people of that time and culture were like - I especially liked the use of Hel but as I understand it, she was the governess of the Norse underworld and not the place itself. If you had mentioned that in any of your notes.. I'm sorry but I had no time to read them as the next chapter was begging to be read.

Most importantly you brought the story to a practical end, not all white fields and happily ever after, though in some cases that is exactly what is needed. Here though, you applied the right pressure to make a truly enjoyable read and I'm glad you have shared it with us :D

There was for a time a fairly small but active fandom for this movie. I know the picture you're talking about, and I'm glad you were interested enough to click through to the fic.

I was talking with a friend (the same friend who drew the pic, incidentally) a while back about my habit of ingesting vast amounts of fanfic, knowing that the majority of it isn't going worth remembering, because that's the only real way to find the gems. I have not actually been formally educated, although I have an extensive informal education, but it is one of my dreams to get something published one day. I like playing with the constraints of fanfiction, namely being forced to work with established characters in an established world instead of being able to go off on your own. It's a fun exercise.

I've been on something of a kick lately for realistic, messy situations. I'm glad it seemed to come across. As far as including the lesser characters, I've realized my writing style is what can generous be called very "loose" and meandering, and while that's not for everyone, there are some people (myself included) who like reading that kind of stuff. My understanding of Hel is that as well as being the name of the goddess, it and Helheim are both valid ways to refer to the location. And it just flows a little better in the modern vernacular to use it instead of Helheim. Don't worry about reading the author's notes, they pretty much amount to several iterations of "WRITING IS HARD, GUYS!!"

The ending and basic timeline was planned before I started writing, although about half of what made it into the final fic was made up on the spot. I'm glad the ending was satisfying; I know full well a less-than-satisfying end can taint what came before. In closing, thanks for reading, and for your thoughtful comments, which always make my day. :aww:

Okay! It's taken me a few days (darn job and moving) but I was finally able to sit down and read through the final chapters.

It's always interesting to read your comments of frustration over the chapters. I know how you feel in that I sometimes feel the same way when drawings are being unruly. I commend you for sticking through it, though. It's not the happiest feeling (or even easy) to quit on a project that's being difficult.

As for the completion of the actual story, this has been one of my favorites to follow, and I mean that of any fandom, not just HTTYD. Lesbian vikings aside, it was an enjoyable, heart-breaking, happy journey through just a self-discovery story. Astrid starts out having made this decision, then deals with consequences she wasn't expecting (she chooses someone without thinking they might not choose her,) meanwhile Ruff is fighting something she doesn't need to be and it takes her a while to come to terms with it. It was interesting and great to see that it wasn't being gay/bi she was struggling with, but just being in love. I think that was one of the more endearing, real and frustrating qualities you put into her. Very nice balance with the characters and their humor and drama as well.

I also enjoyed the Hiccup/Tuff moments a lot, both in their changes and in Hiccup dealing with his dad. This part from chapter 8: "I think he's just pretending like it doesn't exist. Like, he thinks maybe if he ignores it it'll go away," rang especially close to home with me as it was/still is a bit like that in my family. There were believable emotions and concerns, which, again, just brings us into the characters.

That has to be a fun feeling, though, being done. I know sometimes I'll draw from a fandom so often and then finally reach a point where it's just, "no, I'm done." I wait excitedly for whatever comes next, as I've grown to like your work a lot and not just because you wrote HTTYD, but just your style of writing in general. It's very clean and precise, without over explaining anything. A good style for YA fiction, if I may add, not that you have to focus on that, just that that's what I usually think when I read your work. I hope you take it as a compliment, because I mean it as one. ^^;

Excellent work. Thank you for this. :3

Oh well, moving's no fun but I hope there was at least a positive reason for it.

I feel bad writing those comments because there's entirely too much whining at the Internet as is, but it was cathartic to vent and helped me write the next chapter. I think my main problem is that for some reason the only writing I did in college was stories for classes. I couldn't finish anything on my own. This means that everything I wrote for six years was subjected to a very rigorous 'let's throw eight English majors at this thing to tear it to pieces like their grades depended on it (because they totally do)!' critique process, which, while not exactly fun, at least gave me lots of feedback to work with. With these things I have only myself to rely on, and it makes me nervous. I really need find someone who will dig into these things for me.

I really, really love when someone mentions (or draws) exactly what I was trying to convey. For me, Ruffnut's problem was always that she was kind of emotionally immature and avoided dealing with that stuff, which she did so effectively she couldn't even recognize what exactly the problem was. I was trying to make everything messy and confusing and believably complex, like real relationships tend to be.

This story really made me love Tuffnut, because he hadn't appeared too much before (Hiccup I of course always loved). One of the interesting things I noticed in planning this story is that I didn't really think about topics I wanted to cover -- coming out, family drama, etc. -- and write those in. Different scenes just popped into my head, and I wrote them down. I like it better that way; it feels like instead of shaping the characters into a story of my own, I'm just telling theirs, which means they're well-formed enough to have their own stories.

I'm sorry to hear that about your family. I'm fortunate in that my family was very accepting, but I was head of the GSA at my university during my final year and there were lots of different stories. Like I think we've both mentioned before, it's a subject that means a lot to me, and I do my best to handle it effectively.

It is wonderful being done with this story. I was really worried about feedback every time I posted (though for the most part the worry seemed in vain), but after posting this I was like, "Whatever! I can't change it now, why worry about it?" It was a very liberating feeling :w00t:. I like writing for HTTYD and I love these characters, but, well, like I said in my journal, I don't want to just rehash old ideas. I need some new fandom blood to keep the ideas flowing. So if you have any suggestions I'm open to them.

I like "clean and precise" over "holy crap everything I write is really short." I think I'm going to go with that from now on :D. I've never really thought about what style/genre I would want to write if I did it professionally. I'm just kinda going with the flow. YA fiction works.

Thanks for following the story! It means a lot.

I just finished writing a long HTTYD slash fic. You think I care what canon(ish) pairings there are? Heck naw. I spent most of the movie imagining the White Queen and Alice making out, which should give you a clue to what my preferred pairing is. ;P

I may dip into the occasional OT3, but I think a foursome is just too many people to keep track of :D. The last chapter was never meant to be 'the end', this was, so I'm glad it seems to work.
